Reference / The language of the gi
BJJ gi terms, defined.
A clear starting point for the fabric, fit and training terms you will meet when choosing a gi. 12 terms, in 3 groups.
Read these definitions alongside the specifications for the actual garment. A fabric name or size label is a starting point, not a guarantee of fit or competition eligibility.
01 / The gi & its parts
The gi & its parts
The jacket, trousers and belt you take to training.
- Gi
- The jacket, trousers and belt worn for gi training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Check the product listing to see which pieces are included.
- Kimono
- A word also used by many BJJ brands for the gi. In this context, look for a uniform made for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
- Lapel
- The reinforced edge running down the front of the jacket, continuing from the collar.
- Belt
- The belt secures the jacket and indicates the practitioner’s rank. Follow your academy’s guidance on rank and uniform.
- Drawstring
- A cord or tie used to adjust the trouser waistband. Construction differs by model.
02 / Fabric & fit
Fabric & fit
Terms to read alongside a product’s exact specifications.
- Pearl weave
- A textured weave commonly used for BJJ gi jackets. The weave name alone does not specify fabric weight or fibre composition.
- GSM
- Grams per square metre: the mass of a square metre of fabric. It is not the total weight of a gi.
- Ripstop
- Fabric with a visible reinforcement grid. Check the fibre content and event rules rather than assuming all ripstop trousers have the same properties.
- Pre-shrunk
- A description of processing intended to reduce later shrinkage. It does not guarantee that measurements will remain identical after washing.
- A sizes
- Labels commonly used for adult gi sizes. The actual dimensions are specific to the brand, range and model.
03 / On the mat
On the mat
Common terms for training formats and uniform requirements.
- No-gi
- A training format without the gi jacket and trousers. Ask your academy which rash guards, shorts or other training clothes it requires.
- IBJJF
- International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Its events have published uniform requirements; check the current rules before entering.
For traditional practice garments, always follow the guidance for your discipline and the specifications of the actual item. Nothing on this page describes a Brazilianjiujitsugi product — it describes the vocabulary.
