What is a BJJ gi?

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu gi is the uniform used for gi training: a woven jacket, trousers and a rank belt. Practitioners can grip the jacket and trousers during training, so fit and construction matter.

You may also see a BJJ gi described as a kimono. For shopping, look for the intended discipline and the actual garment specifications; the name alone does not establish suitability.

Gi and no-gi: different kit.

Gi training uses the jacket, trousers and belt. No-gi sessions typically use a rash guard and grappling shorts or other academy-approved training clothing. Check your academy’s requirements before your first class.

A gi purchase is not a substitute for checking what your class uses. Ask about uniform colours, patches and any required layers before ordering.

Read beyond the weave name.

Pearl weave describes the textured woven structure often found in BJJ jackets. GSM means grams per square metre: it describes fabric weight per area, not the total weight of the finished gi.

Treat weave, GSM, fibre composition and construction as separate details. A weight number by itself does not prove durability, comfort or competition eligibility. Check the model specifications and the care instructions together.

Look at the whole uniform.

Compare the collar, sleeve shape, trouser cut, waistband and reinforcement details. Look for clear photographs of the actual item and a description of what is included in the set.

A belt may be sold separately. Check the listing rather than assuming a belt shown in a campaign image comes with the gi.

Fit comes before the label.

Start with the exact model’s height and weight chart, then compare its measurements with a gi that already fits. Adult, women’s and children’s size labels differ between ranges.

Leave room for movement and follow the stated care method. Our size guide explains the questions to ask when you sit between two sizes.

Check your event’s rules.

The IBJJF uniform page lists white, royal blue and black gis with matching jacket, trousers and collar. It also specifies fit, fabric, belt and patch requirements. Other events may use different rules.

Read the current organiser’s requirements before buying for an event. Our editorial images are illustrative and are not certification that any garment is competition-approved.

Make care part of the choice.

Before buying, check that you can follow the garment’s washing and drying instructions. Consider how much drying time you have between sessions. A well-chosen training routine includes time to wash and fully dry your kit.
